Our first edition reported that Reverend Frank Chikane had pulled out of the Johannesburg mayoral contest. The Secretary-General has since described that report as untrue, and Chikane was named among the shortlisted candidates at Sandton on Saturday.
In Issue No. 1, published on 17 August, this bulletin reported — attributing the claim to sources cited in the national press — that Reverend Frank Chikane had withdrawn from the contest for the Johannesburg mayoral candidacy, leaving Mayor Dada Morero and Deputy Mayor Loyiso Masuku as the leading contenders.
That report was wrong.
Speaking at the Sandton International Convention Centre on Saturday, Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula addressed the claim directly. “See more than one name, including that lie that Chikane withdrew,” he said. “You will be here. You should be here.”
Reverend Chikane was named among the three shortlisted candidates for the City of Johannesburg, alongside Mayor Morero and Deputy Mayor Masuku.
This bulletin published the claim in good faith on the strength of national reporting, but a party publication carries a particular duty: a claim about a comrade's standing in an internal contest can damage that comrade and the process itself. We should have sought confirmation from the Provincial or National office before printing it. We did not, and we regret it.
Branches that have already tabled Issue No. 1 at a BGM are asked to read this correction into the record at their next meeting.
